The preserve protects groves of Eastern Hemlock Trees, and much more vegetation that is normally found further west near the Appalachian Mountains. Researchers estimate that the Hemlock Trees in this area are between 300 and 400 years old. People are amazed that they can still survive away from their natural habitat in the mountains. The bluffs and the creek give them enough similar atmosphere and water to maintain life at the preserve.
